When removing molded hair from dolls and action figures, it's not uncommon to create holes in the head. Here are two easy methods for repairing these holes.
When replacing hair on figures with molded hair, you'll want to make sure the head is round so your figure doesn't have a strange head shape, as these figures often do. Cut away any protruding parts to make it as round as possible. During this process, it is easy to make holes. This is fine, but try not to make too big of a gap. Repairs are easiest when you maintain the structure.
The first method to fill in the hole is to use hot glue. In other words, trace the edges of the hole, wait for it to dry, and then add layers until the hole is sealed. Hot glue is also good for filling in the rest of the head to make it a more natural shape. Keep in mind, if you use hot glue for this, it is difficult to make a smooth transition into the rubber since you can't sand it. But if the seam is going to be hidden by the replacement hair, you might not mind this.

The second method, and the method I will be demonstrating on my Harry Potter doll, is to cover the gaps with plastic wrap or masking tape and fill the hole and/or the head in with Apoxie Sculpt.
The plastic/tape gives the clay something to lie on without having to fill the head with cotton balls or tinfoil, limiting the head's articulation.
When gluing plastic wrap down, be careful to keep the edges flat without as little excess as possible. This minimizes the possibility of it interfering with sanding if it protrudes from the clay. Then again, that area will be covered by hair, so it might not be an issue.

Here is what my head looks like filled in. To ensure a seamless transition, add clay a little over the lip of the plastic so you can sand it down smooth later. Otherwise, the edge of the plastic will be visible when you paint it.
And that's my method for repairing holes in doll and action figure heads! Super simple, and super effective.
Love,
Haley
